Berea Rides Campus Mobility Network

Rideshare matching by route overlap rather than dedicated dispatch, beta-tested on a 1,600+ student campus.

A community rideshare app for a residential campus, pairing passengers with drivers whose existing routes overlap theirs, with authenticated accounts and real-time ride status. Founded, built, and beta-tested on campus.

This project is in progress. It is published for transparency about what is being built. Nothing on this page claims a result that has been measured.

The Berea Rides app finding a driver: a route drawn north from Berea to Lexington on a dark map, above a Cancel Search button.

Problem

Students on a residential campus of 1,600+ coordinate rides to town, airports, and home through group chats, where offers and requests are easily missed and there is no record of who committed to what.

Hardest part

The matching rule is regulatory enforcement, not a relevance heuristic: Kentucky exempts carpools from for-hire transport rules only where the trip is incidental to the driver's own commute. Two increasingly precise geometric gates both rejected obvious carpools, and the fix was to make the algorithm coarser and move the judgement to the driver.

Limitations

  • berearides.com is the product landing page, not the running app. The build is not yet publicly installable, so the system itself cannot be inspected from here.
  • No public source or case study yet.
  • Usage during the campus beta was not instrumented, so there are no measured results to report.
  • The matching gate has no measured false-rejection rate and has not been compared against a naive proximity baseline; the design note is a rationale, not an evaluation.
  • Compliance now depends partly on driver judgement at accept time, which is less auditable than an algorithmic threshold.
